February 1, 2024Holiday Gifting And Receiving
Heartfelt thoughtfulness and graciousness. This is what the spirit of holiday gifting and receiving is all about. What does the recipient enjoy, and cherish? Are you showing good etiquette as you receive and open your gift – with a big smile and appreciation?
You may be someone who is inclined to pick up things for your loved ones and friends throughout the year, as you happen upon them. Maybe you prefer to shop online. Perhaps you enjoy the local or the mall shopping experience – or both? It might be that you’re more partial to making/baking/creating yourself. Do what makes your heart happy!
Whether you have a big list or a small list, budget accordingly. Some of us have less monetary means, some of us have more. Bottom line is that gift giving is not a competition or something you do to impress others. It’s about kindness, heartfelt goodness, and thoughtful consideration.
Is it prudent to regift? It could be – or not. Think first and foremost about how the person who gave it to you would feel if you told them. If there’s any inkling they’d be sad, hurt or upset, then no. Your relationship with this person is more important, even if you don’t particularly need or would use the item. If you think this person wouldn’t be offended, then do consider it. If so, make sure the gift is still in the original package (with no personalization), and that the recipient would definitely appreciate it. In addition be mindful that they don’t run in the same social circles.
During your gift exchange, most certainly be appreciative and thoughtful with your response, even if the gift isn’t something you might have wanted or would like. Remember, the gift giver had you specifically in mind, and your graciousness will fill their heart with joy.
What if a new friend or someone unexpectedly gives you a gift, and you hadn’t planned on, or don’t have one for them? On the spot, express your warmhearted and sincere gratefulness for thinking of you and for the present; focus on the moment of gratitude. If you’re so inclined at another time to give them a gift certainly do so; however you’re not obligated.
May your holidays continue to be joyous and merry! 🎁
