Thanksgiving Guest: Grateful And Mindful…

🦃 Thanksgiving is almost here! As a guest at your loved ones’ or friends’ home for the day’s festivities, how to be gracious and mindful? I’ve got tips!

  • Can you help out before the event?

Ask your host a few days ahead if you can run some last minute errands or bring an elderly family member or friend who doesn’t drive.

  • Is the meal potluck and your host has asked that you bring a specific dish or side?

Take into account that your host has carefully planned the meal and please bring just their request. Perhaps you bring your special dish in a disposable container to minimize clean up. Or, you could bring your creation in a lovely dish that’s also a host gift.

  • Is the host fully cooking/baking the entire meal, and asked that you not bring a side dish?

Consider a host gift they can use for another time such as: a bottle of their favorite wine or non-alcoholic beverage; a fruit basket, cookie plate or charcuterie tray; or holiday candle, napkin rings or coasters.

  • Might you or your family members have special dietary considerations or allergies?

Check with your host and offer to bring a complementary dish for everyone to share.

  •  What time should you arrive?

Ask your host if they’d like you to be there a little early to help, ie setting the table, stirring the gravy, filling the water glasses, taking guests’ coats.

If they decline, arrive on time and not early (remember they will be busy finessing the particulars). It’s also fine to arrive a few minutes after designated start time.

  • Do you sense controversy at the table?

Gently deflect and transition: what about the fabulous homemade cornbread, or which team do you think will win the game?

  • What can you help with after the meal?

Clear your place setting, help clear the table, wrap food for storage, offer an arm to help escort others to the living room for board games, football game or a movie.

  • Is it getting to be time to leave?

Pick up on your hosts’ cues, and, don’t overstay.

  • Have you sent your written note of thanks after Thanksgiving?

Convey your gratefulness via text, email or handwritten note; be sure to share a special memory from the day, and let them how much you enjoyed being together with everyone.

And most of all, may your Thanksgiving celebration be delicious and fun-filled! 🥘🍁💛
