October 28, 2020Our Eyes Show Our True Feelings…
“The eyes are the window to the soul.” – William Shakespeare
Our eyes show our true feelings, our own truth. Like body language, our eyes emote and reveal without us saying a word.
Our smiles are our cues to others that we’re feeling joy, pride, happiness, excitement, care, warmth, kindness and acknowledgment, among other emotions.
Fun Fact: A famous smile is called the Duchenne smile, named after scientist Guillaume Duchenne, whose work found the “felt” smile – the one that shows others genuine happiness. It’s the one that connects our smiling mouth with our smiling eyes, what’s called our “true smile” – the connection where we genuinely crinkle our eyes when we genuinely smile.
In this era of engaging with others while wearing masks, sometimes we may feel it’s difficult to let another person know we’re smiling or excited, whether we’re speaking or not. We want to go beyond by making sure that our eyes are emoting our genuine feelings of joy. It may take a little more practicing of what we like to call pandemic mindfulness – so by all means, crinkle away, and smile your true smile!
