Talking Business While Dining Out?

Unless the premise is specifically “just business” ie having lunch to delve further about a project deadline or recapping a meeting, be mindful of a few guidelines of talking business while getting coffee or dining out.

If your meal is initiated/hosted by your manager, client or vendor without a nod beforehand about business at hand, wait for them to bring up the topic, as their intention may be social only.

With a group of colleagues? It’s easy to fall into talking about work as that’s how you know each other and it’s your common ground. If talking about business, never let it turn to gossip. And, try to get some socializing in as well; it’s good for the soul to take a break.

Otherwise, keep in mind:

  • At breakfast talk about it swiftly, as it’s usually the quickest meal of the day, and everyone has their busy workday ahead. For example, bring up the topic on the way to the restaurant if driving or walking together, or while waiting for your table.
  • While having lunch, mention work after everyone has ordered their meal.
  • With respect to dinner, reference business issues after the final course, ie when dessert or coffee is served.
  • If meeting at a coffee shop or bar, keep it light unless the meet-up is arranged as such.

Fun Fact: In some cultures, it’s taboo to talk about business during a meal. Many cultures use meal time for building and solidifying relationships, in essence becoming more social with one another.
