Improving Communication In The Multi Generational Workplace

In today’s world, most of us work in a multi generational environment, whether it be directly or indirectly, internally or externally. Loss of messaging and misunderstandings can easily occur if people utilize only their preferred communication methodologies. By being intentional in tailoring our correspondence styles we can all learn from each other. Thereby we foster inclusivity, growth and productivity in our workplace.

How do we do this? By understanding how the different generations are inclined to connect. Subsequently we broaden our own modus operandi and can more easily exchange knowledge and proficiencies. To highlight:

  • Gen Z are digital natives, hence are able to navigate tech at a rapid pace. They tend to favor quick responses i.e., through texting and instant/direct messaging. As Gen Z’s are entering the in-person professional workforce they more than likely have spent a large chunk of their last few years studying and working mostly online. They tend to be less formal than other generations regarding their styles of communicating. At the same time they’re adaptable, curious and bring fresh thinking.
  • Millennials/Gen X/Xennials prefer email/Slack/texts/instant messaging ergo informal, concise communication. They can help to build the generations as they adapted to digital communication early in their careers with the foundation of low tech and in-person workplace. They drive innovation, are resourceful and seek constant growth opportunities.
  • Boomers/Gen Jones enjoy in-person meetings, phone conversations and are typically more formal on emails and general communication. Unless they’ve always worked in technology, certain tech platforms or programs may take a beat to become familiar with all the nuances. They bring wisdom, experience, perspective and industry expertise.

The multi generational magic can happen when we’re more aware of how to ideally connect with each other’s styles, and embrace those practices. Further, we can ask for help, mentor, collaborate, blend, find common ground, validate and value communication processes outside of our comfort zone. It’s not about one way or the only way. It’s about how to collectively work together better to cultivate a more cohesive and respectful workplace for optimal success all-around.
