With the pandemic evolving to endemic phase, there are still many unknowns and new findings; hence societal guidelines, stipulations and decisions about wearing masks continue to unfold. Many public spaces/venues, medical facilities and businesses are now mask optional; whilst some remain with mask-wearing requirements. Families and friend groups are also having similar conversations, and making comparable decisions.
How can we can continue with the spirit of a kind and polite society throughout these transitions?
First, keep in mind that older people and those who are immunocompromised or have underlying health conditions may opt to continue wearing masks for personal safety, protection and risk factors. There are some folks and young children who may feel more comfortable to sustain wearing masks for their own individual safeguard reasons. And others may feel healthy and prefer to not wear masks in general, doing so as requested or required.
Whatever the particular circumstances for wearing/not wearing a mask, there is always reason to treat others with respect, understanding and civility even if you differ in your reasons. If there is a question, make your response about your business/workplace health concerns, or about yourself and your personal point of view and keep it at that.
As Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe says, “Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.”
